Watch Out For This SCAM!

Two well-dressed white men pose as employees of a security company. One man stays by the car while the other comes to your door. If you have an ADT Security sticker in your window, they will pose as ADT employees. If you have a Westinghouse Security sticker in your window, they will pose as Westinghouse employees. With the intent to gain access to your house, they will tell you that there has been a power outage or some other problem with the company's system and they need to check your security system.

DO NOT let them gain access to your house. This is A SCAM. Security company employees will not come to your home unannounced.

On July 13th at 3:00pm, two well-dressed white men attempted this scam against a member of our community. She had not called her security company, so she was very suspicious. She asked them a lot of questions. She requested to see their employee identification badges. Something did not feel right about the situation to her. She went back into her house and called the police. Before she called the police, one of the scam artists said the following to her, "Oh, so we have us a smart n***er."

Should a company's employees come to your home unannounced trying to gain access to your home, and you have not requested that someone from that company come to your home,

Do not let them in. Do not open the door. Ask questions.

Ask to see their employee ID badges.
Ask why they have come to your home.
Ask why they have come unnanounced, AND
Call the company, using the phone number from your bill, to verify whether the company has actually sent one of their employees to your home. Provide the company with the name and employee identification number if the person has given them to you.

If they will not show you an employee identification badge, if their answers to your questions are not sufficient for you, and especially if the company has not sent an employee to your home,

Call the police--immediately.

Provide the police with as much identifying information as possible.

If something does not feel right, then go with your gut instinct.

Be alert. Be aware. Be Safe.
